The resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ is the cornerstone of our faith. Only God can conquer death and grant eternal life. Since man cannot enter the kingdom of heaven without God's help, and sins before the Lord, He takes the initiative to grant eternal life to His creation through the Economy of Salvation.
In the icon of the Resurrection, the central figure is, of course, the risen Christ. With a stern yet merciful gaze, he steps through the gates of Hell, which is a symbol of victory over death. At his feet there are scattered shackles and locks, bearing the same symbolic meaning. There are traces of crucifixion wounds on both hands and feet of the resurrected Christ; at the same time, His shining robes, swiftness of motion, and golden halo around his head, testify to His supremacy over life and death.
With His hands He takes Adam and Eve by the wrist and lifts them out of their graves. The first people are amazed; they bow respectfully before their Savior.
Behind Adam, there are the kings of Israel, David and Solomon, talking to one another. As a Son of His Virgin Mother, Jesus comes from David's lineage. He fulfills the Old Testament prophecy of the coming of the Messiah. Behind Eve, John the Baptist, the last of the prophets, is depicted. He earned his place as the one who prepared the way for the Messiah. Next to John the Baptist stands the descendant of Adam and Eve, Abel, who offered a sacrifice pleasing to God and was unjustly killed by his brother Cain. In his right hand he holds his shepherd's staff and with his left he points to Christ.
The Resurrection of Jesus is the greatest Christian feast. It is solemnly and magnificently celebrated all over the world, wherever believers live.
