This handmade icon is an exact replica of the icon of Theotokos Oikonomissa from the Monastery of Great Lavra of Mount Athos. Made on natural wood with the use of traditional materials. Crafted with 22K gold leaves. Reproduction according to the museum print standards.
The icon received its name from the memory of the words which the Theotokos spoke to Saint Athanasius the Athonite: that she would always take care of the material needs of the monastery, because she would be its “house-keeper” (“oikonomissa” in Greek). Indeed, to this very day, the important obedience of house-keeper is not delegated to any of the monks of the Monastery, but only an assistant house-keeper is assigned.
