Feodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God

Icon made on natural linden wood with water-gilding technique. After the thermal treatment, the wood was gilded with 22K gold leaf, in accordance with traditional Byzantine techniques. The icon has been painted with egg tempera for a higher quality and durability of the colors.

Feodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God is depicted embracing the Divine Infant. Jesus wraps His arms around her neck, pressing His cheek warmly against hers. The gentle tilt of their faces expresses the tenderness and affection of their relationship. In this particular depiction, the holy great martyr Theodore Stratelates is represented holding the precious relic. According to tradition, the icon of Theotokos appeared to him miraculously. In this composition, he is shown carrying the icon in front of the town of Kastroma, Russia. In the upper right corner, Jesus Christ is depicted blessing the prince with His right hand while holding a closed scroll in His left.
