Icon made on natural linden wood with water-gilding technique. After the thermal treatment, the wood was gilded with 22K gold leaf, in accordance with traditional Byzantine techniques. The icon has been painted with egg tempera for a higher quality and durability of the colors.
Saint Maximus the Greek is portrayed as a great teacher, with a humble expression and modest attire. He wears monastic garments marked with the sign of the cross, while his gaze is serious, austere, and yet gentle. His thick white beard symbolizes his wisdom as well as his ascetic way of life. In his right hand he holds a wooden cross, a testimony of faith and a sign of his martyrdom. In his left hand he carries an open scroll, indicating his contribution to the study of the holy texts and to the spread of the message of the Gospel
