In the icon of the Nativity of Theotokos, there is depicted the scene of the birth of Mary by Saint Anne. The image carries rich symbolism and theological significance. At the center of the composition there is Saint Anne on the bed, while beside her lies the newborn Mary in a cradle. The two women are attended by maidservants caring for both mother and child. In the background there stands Joachim, with his hands raised in prayer, as an angel of the Lord greets him from heaven, praising God for this miraculous intervention. The icon emphasizes the importance of Theotokos’ birth as a precursor to the Incarnation of the Lord and the salvation of humankind.
