Saint Cyril is depicted as a divinely inspired hierarch, wearing ascetic vestments. In his hands he holds the Gospel and a cross, symbols of his teaching and spiritual enlightenment. The saint was originally named Constantine but took the name Cyril when he became a monk in Rome. He spoke many languages and served as a missionary, spreading the message of the Gospel. He is considered the enlightener of the Slavs, as, together with his brother Saint Methodius, he translated the sacred texts and preached God’s Word in the Slavic languages.
