The image of the Resurrection of the Lord, also known as the “Descent into Hades,” is one of the most beautiful representations of the Orthodox Christian iconography. As the holy hymns of our Church attest, Christ is depicted breaking the gates of Hades, standing upon their shattered wooden panels and surrounded by radiant glory. He lifts Adam up, grasping him by the wrist, vividly symbolizing the Lord’s irreversible decision to save humankind. Around Him there are portrayed David, Solomon, Saint John the Forerunner, and the righteous of the Old Testament, all awaiting salvation.
