Crucifixion of the Lord

The iconography of the crucifixion scene is centered on the face of the crucified Christ. The Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist are depicted on either side of the Cross.
The crucifixion of the Lord is an event of great importance and theological significance for the Orthodox Church. As far back as the Old Testament, there are many prehistories and prophecies about the crucifixion and the "tree of the cross." Before Christ was crucified for our sins, anyone who died through crucifixion was considered damned. After Jesus died on the cross, it became a symbol of redemption. From an instrument of death the cross became an eternal source of life, from a horrible instrument of execution it turned into a bright and blessed sign.
