Valerian is medically used to treat sleep disorders. Studies have shown it to be an effective natural remedy for insomnia. Valerian is often combined with hops or other herbs that also cause drowsiness.
To combat insomnia, pour a handful of valerian leaves over two cups of boiling water and let steep for 45 minutes in a tightly covered pot. Drink 3-4 times a day, with the last intake 30-45 minutes before bedtime. It is important to remember that too large doses of valerian can cause malaise. Valerian has a sedative, anticonvulsant and hypotensive effects. It is indicated in diseases of the nervous system as a neurotonic and sedative.
Valerian should be used for no more than one week, followed by a break of 2-3 weeks.
