Icon made on natural linden wood with water-gilding technique. After the thermal treatment, the wood was gilded with 22K gold leaf, in accordance with traditional Byzantine techniques. The icon has been painted with egg tempera for a higher quality and durability of the colors.
Saint Nicholas Planas is depicted wearing particularly humble priestly vestments. His expression is simple and serene. His head is covered, while a thick beard surrounds his face. With both hands he holds a closed Gospel, symbolizing his saintly life, his unceasing prayer, and his devoted service to the Church. On the decorative back of the book, one can discern the four allegorical figures of the Evangelists (Mark as a lion, Luke as an ox, John as an eagle, and Matthew as an angel), as well as the central figure of the Risen Jesus.
