In the icon of Pentecost, the twelve Apostles are depicted seated in a circular arrangement. From heaven descends the Holy Spirit as a ray of light, directed individually to each of them. At the base of the composition, the “world” is represented as an old man wearing a crown. The surrounding darkness symbolizes the shadow of death that afflicted humanity before receiving the light of the Gospel. The personified world holds in his hands a white sheet containing twelve closed scrolls, symbols of the twelve Apostles, to whom the preaching of God’s Word has been entrusted.
