The Mother of God, or Theotokos, is the primary person who, after the Holy Trinity, contributed decisively to the realization of the plan of Salvation of the human race. A particularly popular icon of her among the faithful is that of the Theotokos the Merciful.
Christ comes very close to His Mother, with His face turned towards Hers. He holds a closed scroll in His right hand, while holding on to Her garment with His left. This original icon was painted on Mt. Athos, by the monks of the Holy Koutloumousian Cell of Saint John the Theologian.
