Handmade wooden prayer ropes are woven by the monks of Mount Athos. The weaving of the prayer ropes is one of the main types of monastic handicraft, as it is an important attribute of prayer. It sets the rhythm and helps one to concentrate during a long prayer.
Prayer rope consists of wooden grains separated by larger metal beads (splitters). A metal cross with a rayon tassel is woven into it.
Like all Athos handicrafts, prayer ropes are woven by hand with diligence and unceasing prayer. Labor is an integral part of monastic life. According to tradition, each monk chooses work according to his liking and abilities; he then works daily, while praying incessantly. This is why every such piece of handicraft work is a priceless gift and a true blessing from the Holy Mountain.
