Handmade prayer rope with 33 wooden beads

Handmade wooden prayer ropes are woven by the monks of Mount Athos. The weaving of the prayer ropes is one of the main types of monastic handicraft, as it is an important attribute of prayer. It sets the rhythm and helps one to concentrate during a long prayer.

The length of this prayer rope with tassel is 23 cm, the length of the thread is 30 cm; it consists of 33 wooden grains. A metal cross with a rayon tassel is woven into the prayer rope. The cross has an image of Mother of God. Inscription on the back of the cross: Κύριε Ιησού Χριστέ Ελέησον με (Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me).

Like all Athos handicrafts, prayer ropes are woven by hand with diligence and unceasing prayer. Labor is an integral part of monastic life. According to tradition, each monk chooses work according to his liking and abilities; he then works daily, while praying incessantly.
